As a frequent user/visitor of social media platforms, I have observed troubling trends where individuals resort to using offensive language, profanity, and disrespectful behavior to express their frustrations on various issues. It’s disheartening to witness how anger and hatred seem to pervade every corner of online spaces, including our own homes. Social media platforms, in particular, exacerbate these negative emotions, as many users hide behind the cloak of anonymity to engage in harassment and bullying. What’s even more concerning is that negativity often garners more attention and engagement than positive content. Even within communities on social media pages and private chat groups, hurtful and divisive comments, especially regarding differing political views, frequently go unmoderated
While expressing our opinions and frustrations is a vital aspect of our freedom of expression, it’s equally crucial to actively promote positivity to counteract the pervasive anger and hatred that have engulfed some online spaces. Engaging in online discussions and forums responsibly can serve as a powerful means of evangelization, inspiring others to adopt a more constructive and compassionate approach. By spreading love and understanding through our words and actions, we uphold the fundamental commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves, contributing to a more harmonious and uplifting online community.
In light of recent incidents on social media, it’s imperative that we embrace our roles as responsible citizens and children of God. Social media holds immense potential as a tool for spreading God’s love, rather than fostering anger and hatred. Unfortunately, topics related to gossip and entertainment are more popular compared to those related to faith and spirituality as the latter can be more relatable and accessible to a broader audience. Gossip and entertainment topics often involve elements of controversy, drama, or sensationalism, which can attract more attention and reactions compared to discussions about faith and spirituality. Engaging with gossip and entertainment content at the expense of topics related to spirituality and faith can indeed have negative consequences for individuals and society as a whole.
On the other hand, discussions about faith and spirituality can foster deeper connections, empathy, and understanding among individuals compared to gossip and entertainment which often encourage superficial interactions and short-lived enjoyment. By prioritizing meaningful content, we can contribute to building a more compassionate and empathetic online community. Reflecting on the timeless lessons from the lives of the Saints serves as a poignant reminder of our human weaknesses and the boundless mercy of God. It’s essential to exercise mindfulness in our interactions on social media platforms, considering the impact of our words and actions on others. Let us strive to use these digital spaces as avenues for promoting kindness, empathy, and understanding, aligning our online presence with the values of love and compassion exemplified by our faith.
Loving and generous God, teach us how to be true followers of Yours. May we remain steadfast in our devotion to You, not forsaking or betraying You amidst both good times and bad times. Grant us the strength to endure challenges and overcome obstacles.
We are grateful for the precious gift of free will, allowing us to make choices and pursue our own paths. Thank You for blessing us with the ability to speak and express our beliefs and opinions through our mouths and lips. May we use our voices to proclaim Your justice and declare Your wondrous deeds.
