Simbang Gabi – A Rewarding Experience

Simbang Gabi ( literally translated in English as “Night or Evening Mass”) is famous to many Catholics worldwide, especially to Filipinos. As mentioned in previous blog posts on the subject, Simbang Gabi is also better known in other countries as “Misa de Aguinaldo”, Misa de Gallo or “Dawn Mass”. Traditionally, it is being undertaken during the Advent season of the liturgical year in preparation for the Christmas season. Simbang Gabi normally takes nine days of novena masses in the wee hours of the morning (about 4:00 a.m.)  of 16th December and ends on the eve of 24th December. In the … more »

The Joy of Joining A Multi-Choir Gig: A Precious Moment

Two months ago, posted an article about the feast day of San Lorenzo Ruiz at St. Patrick's Cathedral wherein a large choir, composed of representatives of various choir groups in NYC, performed during the said event. Some of these choir members will have the chance to do it again on the 3rd of December to kick-off the “Dawn Masses” or “Simbang Gabi” which is a tradition in some parts of the globe and which is also timely as it is the 1st of the series of the 4 Sundays of Advent. As mentioned in the previous blogs, choir music … more »

Bonding With “The Madz” – A Power House Group

(Feature Article) The world-renowned University of the Philippines (U.P.) Madrigal Singers (a.k.a “Madz” ) had a series of performances in the U.S. this year's fall season for about two months (September-October) that culminated two days ago in Queens, NYC, and after having two presentations in NYC (one in Manhattan and another in Bronx) and in New Jersey which were all jam packed with crowds of all kinds of people. I have known the Madz several years back in the entertainment field and since then I have so much admiration of their renditions of all kinds of songs. Every time Madz … more »

A Momentous and Historic Event – A Personal Reflection

I thought this article would document in a way the first Filipino Mass ever performed in NY Ozone Park’s St. Mary Gates of Heaven Church’ (SMGHC), in its over 100 years of existence. SMGHC has welcomed another community to celebrate the Holy Mass in their native language, the first of which was held on December 29,2010, and the second one on February 6, 2011. It was wonderful to see all “Pinoy” parishioners flocking to the Church and celebrating the said event with some merry making and food to share after the Mass. Such occasion affirmed the Church commitment to … more »

A Sneak Preview of the 2010 Simbang Gabi in the Big Apple – Tips and Thoughts

I recall my first Simbang Gabi (or Mass at Dawn) in NYC, I braved the winter chills and the snowy weather just to complete the 9-day novena mass. That was quite a sacrifice for me as I have to travel for an hour after a busy day just to make it there on time. As a matter of fact I was constrained to write something about it as a memento as it was my very first in a foreign land and after a long respite from attending the celebration. Fortunately, the said write-up was published in one of the newsletters of one of … more »

HCJ-Fil Choir 1st YTb – “Hindi Kita Malilimutan” – Tips and Thoughts

Do you know that the month of November is dedicated to the holy souls in purgatory? Probably, some of you may only be aware that the 2nd day of November (after All Saints Day) is the feast day of the holy souls in purgatory, but not for the entire month of November. I understand that under the Church’s culture, the living faithful are enjoined and reminded to pray for the said souls whose sins have already been forgiven before they die but sill have to pass the purgatory to suffer and cleanse their sins before entering Heaven. Our prayers for … more »

Our Lady of Manaoag Feast Day Celebrations in NYC

For Catholics worldwide, the month of October is dedicated to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. It is one of the major Marian feast days particularly for devotees of the Blessed Virgin Mary and believers of the significance and powers of the Holy Rosary. The feast day of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of Manaoag likewise falls in October and is consistently celebrated by Filipino migrants throughout the United States, particularly the natives of Manaoag, Pangasinan, a town which is about more than 100 miles north of Manila. The original image of Our Lady of Manaoag is currently … more »

San Lorenzo Ruiz Enthronement – A Significant Event

For Filipino migrants in the United States, particularly in NYC’s Queens area , the enthronement of San Lorenzo Ruiz (SLR) at the Holy Child Jesus (HCJ) Church was truly a blessing! When HCJ’s Parish Administrator (Rev. Father Francis Colamaria)  met with the Filipino leadership apostolate two months ago and discussed about plans for SLR’s image enthronement in the church, there was no hesitation at all from both sides!. Said plan was actually opportune and timely as the enthronement was to be undertaken within the centennial celebration period of HCJ, which  made it more signficant.   The installation of SLR’s 4-ft. image at HCJ may … more »

A Memorial Mass and Peace Concert – A Tribute to 9/11 Victims, Relatives and Survivors

September 11, 2001 was the day when two local commercial planes started crashing into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. I recall vividly this day, I was in my home country when the said tragic incident happened. Coming from a grueling work-related meeting that day, I decided to relax a bit, turned on the TV before going to bed. To my dismay however, I wasn’t able to sleep early and well after being glued on TV until the wee hours of the morning watching live via CNN the two planes flying strangely low and hitting the twin towers … more »
